A 32-year-old Singapore permanent resident has been sentenced to eight months and four weeks behind bars after stabbing the husband of his girlfriend during a confrontation at a Yishun void deck.

The victim was still legally married to the woman at the time, although divorce proceedings were already underway. The violent encounter left the man with a serious chest wound and required hospital treatment.

Apart from the stabbing offence, the accused, identified as Prabhakaran Vinayaka, also faced charges linked to the misuse of bank accounts and traffic-related offences, Shin Min Daily News reported.

Argument Escalated Into Violent Attack

Court proceedings revealed that the incident took place on the evening of June 13, 2025, at the void deck of a residential block along Yishun Avenue 6.

The victim, his wife and their daughter were reportedly in the area when the confrontation occurred. At some point, the victim went downstairs to look for his daughter and encountered Prabhakaran.

A heated argument soon broke out between the two men. During the dispute, Prabhakaran allegedly produced a weapon and stabbed the victim in the right side of his chest.

The injured man began bleeding immediately and emergency services were alerted.

Victim Sustained Serious Chest Injury

Medical reports presented in court showed that the victim suffered a 14cm stab wound to the chest.

Doctors also diagnosed him with an open pneumothorax, a potentially dangerous condition where air enters the space between the lung and chest wall, affecting breathing.

In addition to the chest injury, the victim sustained several minor wounds, including abrasions on his jaw and cuts to his abdomen and upper arm.

He was admitted to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and remained there for several days before being discharged. The victim was subsequently given two weeks of medical leave to recover from his injuries.

Police arrested Prabhakaran two days after the incident.

Additional Offences Revealed

Investigations uncovered that Prabhakaran was also involved in separate offences unrelated to the stabbing case.

Court documents showed that he had received money in exchange for handing over internet banking credentials linked to his bank account. He was initially paid S$600 and later received another S$3,000 after the account was eventually closed.

In a separate incident, he accepted S$1,000 to open another bank account on behalf of an unidentified individual. Authorities later discovered that the account had allegedly been used to channel more than S$95,000 in suspected criminal proceeds.

Prabhakaran was also found to have ridden a motorcycle without holding a valid driving licence earlier this year.

Pleaded For Leniency

During sentencing, Prabhakaran pleaded guilty to multiple charges and appealed for leniency from the court. He told the judge that his girlfriend was expecting a child and hoped this would be taken into consideration.

The court ultimately sentenced him to eight months and four weeks’ imprisonment.

In addition, he was fined S$4,000, with a default jail term of 10 days if the fine is not paid. He was also disqualified from obtaining or holding any class of driving licence for 24 months.

The case highlights the serious consequences of violent disputes and the growing concern surrounding the use of personal bank accounts in suspected money laundering activities.
