Joseph Schooling is the first and only Singaporean by far to have won an Olympic Gold medal, back in the RIO Olympics in 2016, beating many others notably USA’s Michael Phelps to clinch the Gold Medal.

Here is what the President posted

Few dream of making it to the Olympics. Even fewer can dream of winning a gold and breaking the Olympics record, like Joseph Isaac Schooling did.

But what Joseph did was show us what it means to have the hunger to excel. To go beyond what others think we are capable of. And to make our own dreams, big or small, come true.

What Aug 12, 2016 also showed was how sports has the power to unite Singaporeans. Nothing compares with the screams of joy around the island the moment Joseph touched the edge of the pool ahead of the legendary Michael Phelps and other stars.

Thank you, Jo.

Thanks to your parents, May and the late Colin Schooling.

And thanks to those who coached Jo from his earliest days. Including Vincent Poon, who first taught him to swim as a giggling 3 year old, and to be fearless against the bigger boys.

You raised us all.

Netizens also thank Schooling

Netizens have also thanked Joseph Schooling for his dedication and efforts, and for putting Singapore onto the international podium.

Here are some of their comments:

  • Yes indeed – he is our Star Mr. President. Thanks for personally acknowledging the gruelling years of hardwork put in by the Schooling family that put Singapore on the Map of Olympics – rare for Singapore
  • Truly a great Singapore hero. It took a village, starting with Joe’s dedicated parents, Coaches, teachers, classmates, team mates, friends, to bring up this 1 star. We need to replicate this, so as to fill the sky with more Singapore stars.
  • Indeed the family contributed much to his success and their love were and is always so unconditional and sacrificial. We wish him all the best in his new Season ahead, Blessings
  • The moment our national anthem played to everyone around the world with Schooling on the podium was unforgettable.
  • Thank you Joseph Schooling for making Singapore proud. Jiayou for your next career adventure
