S’PORE STEPS UP SECURITY MEASURES FOLLOWING JOHOR’S POLICE STATION ATTACK

Security measures in Singapore have been stepped up following an attack on a police station in Ulu Tiram, Malaysia’s Johor state, on May 17. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced on May 18 that it has increased security measures, including at checkpoints, in response to the heightened threat situation.

Enhanced Checks and Patrols at Checkpoints

The MHA stated that travellers should expect delays at the checkpoints due to enhanced checks, and advised them to factor in additional time needed for immigration clearance. The ministry has also increased patrols and implemented enhanced checks on travellers to ensure the safety and security of the public.

Attack on Ulu Tiram Police Station

The attack on the Ulu Tiram police station resulted in the deaths of two Malaysian police officers, with another injured. Although the intruder was initially believed to be a member of the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) terrorist group, Malaysia’s Inspector-General of Police later clarified that the suspect had no connection to the group.

The MHA and Home Team departments have been closely monitoring global and regional security developments, including the Ulu Tiram attack. The Internal Security Department (ISD) has also been in touch with its Malaysian counterparts to gather more information on the incident.

Public Urged to Remain Vigilant

The MHA advised the public to be vigilant and to report any suspicious persons or activities to the police immediately. The public can also contact the ISD on 1800-2626-473 if they know of anyone who shows signs of being radicalised. In the event of an attack, the public is reminded to follow the “run, hide, and tell” protocol, and to visit the SGSecure website for more information.

Conclusion

The Singapore government’s swift response to the attack on the Ulu Tiram police station demonstrates its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of its citizens. By stepping up security measures and urging the public to remain vigilant, the government aims to prevent similar attacks from occurring in Singapore.
