Singaporean Man, 26, Arrested In Bali Over Alleged Murder Of Girlfriend
A 26-year-old Singaporean man has been arrested in Bali after he was accused of killing his girlfriend and concealing her body inside their rented accommodation.
Indonesian authorities allege that the man strangled the 26-year-old woman following a dispute related to their relationship before attempting to flee the area.
The suspect was arrested just hours after the victim’s body was discovered at a rental property in South Denpasar on Jul. 15.
Victim Found After Family Became Concerned
According to Indonesian media reports, the victim’s younger sibling became worried after repeated attempts to contact her went unanswered.
The sibling, who worked with the victim at a billiards hall in Kuta, decided to visit the rental house to check on her welfare.
Upon arriving at the property, a strong foul odour was reportedly detected near the entrance gate.
Inside the residence, the sibling noticed strands of hair and part of a body concealed beneath stuffed toys, prompting immediate concern.
While at the property, the suspect allegedly emerged from a neighbouring room. When questioned about the victim’s whereabouts, he reportedly remained silent.
The victim’s sibling then confronted him before the suspect fled the scene on a motorcycle.
Police officers later arrived and discovered the victim’s body lying on the floor. Investigators said the body had been covered with stuffed toys and a neatly folded carpet.
Suspect Arrested Hours Later
Authorities launched an immediate manhunt following the discovery.
According to Denpasar police, officers tracked down and arrested the Singaporean man approximately three hours later along Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai while he was allegedly attempting to make his way towards Sanur.
Police chief commissioner Leonardo D Simatupang said preliminary investigations indicate the victim was strangled for around 15 minutes.
The suspect was taken into custody by a joint operation involving officers from the Bali Regional Police, Denpasar Police and South Denpasar Police.
Relationship Dispute Believed To Be Motive
Investigators believe the alleged killing stemmed from problems within the couple’s relationship.
Police said the pair had been together for around a year and had reportedly experienced multiple disputes during that time.
According to the victim’s sibling, arguments had previously erupted after the suspect was allegedly caught being unfaithful on more than one occasion.
A separate witness told investigators she had recently entered into a relationship with the suspect after meeting him at a billiards hall in West Denpasar.
The woman claimed she stayed at the same rental property several days before the body was discovered and noticed a foul smell inside the house. When she later questioned the suspect about it, he allegedly reacted angrily and punched a wall.
Visa Overstay Also Under Investigation
Police further revealed that the Singaporean had allegedly overstayed his Indonesian visa by around one year.
Authorities said he originally entered Bali as a tourist but had remained in the country beyond the validity of his immigration pass.
The victim’s body was transported to Prof Ngoerah Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar for a post-mortem examination.
Investigators reported signs of decomposition, swelling and skin peeling due to the condition of the body when it was found.
The case remains under investigation as Indonesian authorities continue gathering evidence and preparing charges against the suspect.
