If you’re planning a quick trip to Johor Bahru, remain alert and vigilant, especially when you are visiting crowded areas.
A Singaporean tourist reportedly fell victim to pickpockets recently at the Century GArden Night Market, and lost about RM10,281 ($3k) in cash to the thieves, according to China Press.
The Century Garden Night Market
The Century Garden Night Market, located at Jalan Seladang, Johor Bahru, close to the KSL City Mall, has become a popular destination for tourists. Its bustling atmosphere and vibrant stalls attract numerous visitors every week.
However, tourists are not the only ones flocking over to the night market, with pickpockets sensing the opportunity to target potential victims there as well.
Mr Zheng Liangzhong, the night market’s manager, revealed that pickpocket cases have become a recurring problem at the Century Garden Night Market and that cases of pickpocketing have been happening almost weekly, as reported by China Press.
Be vigilant
The Singaporean tourist who lost S$3,000 in cash is not an isolated case. Stall owners and the night market manager have observed an increase in such incidents lately. This raises concerns about the safety of visitors in crowded places like night markets.
According to insider information shared by Mr Zheng, most of the pickpockets operating at the Century Garden Night Market are believed to be Indonesian nationals in the country on tourist visas.
After committing their crimes, they leave the area undetected, making it difficult for authorities to apprehend them.
Dato’ Yow Boon Choon, the President of the South Johor Hawkers and Petty Traders Association, has taken note of the rising pickpocket cases and is collaborating with the police to address the issue. Regular patrols will be conducted to monitor the market and ensure the safety of visitors.
Visitor Safety Measures
While the authorities are taking action, visitors are also urged to play their part in safeguarding their belongings. Some safety measures include:
- Keep Valuables Secure: Make use of anti-theft bags or keep valuables in inner pockets where pickpockets can’t easily reach.
- Avoid Flashy Jewelry: Wearing expensive and flashy jewelry can attract unwanted attention from thieves.
- Stay Vigilant in Crowds: Pay extra attention to your surroundings when in crowded places, as pickpockets often strike in such environments.
