S’POREAN MANAGER BEING DISRESPECTED BY FOREIGN STAFF WHO REFUSE TO LISTEN TO HIM

Should I quit my job?

Advertisements

Im a Singaporean who works in a engineering company that specializes in cleanroom applications and have been there for 2 years.

My foreign workers shows me 0 respect and I have difficulties getting them to do tasks.

They often misinterpret my instructions and do things that I dont remember asking for.

I no longer have any motivation to stay in the company and am thinking of leaving to improve my mental health better.

However my boss is a nice guy and would feel bad leaving because it would add on to their workload.

Need advice on whether I should go ahead and tender resignation?

Thanks.

  1. Your decision should not be influenced by how your boss or colleagues feel. I hope you can give more thought about yourself as an employee, co-worker, and leader. There must be lessons you can learn from this. Don’t make a move and end up in a similar situation.
  2. My own boss ( a nice guy) put it this way:
‘If you can find better prospects elsewhere, please go. Don’t let your loyalty to this company stop you. Value your career prospects and your ability to provide for your family first. No hard feelings if you leave. I will even be your character referee.’
  3. What does your boss say about your troubles with managing the floor workers? Your boss should set you up for success. If he can’t help you at all with the workers, sounds like he isn’t such a nice boss.
Also, why do the floor workers not follow your instructions? Do they not understand English? Have you tried learning some words in their language as an intermediary solution? Is there a proper carrot / stick system in your company (your boss should set these things up imo) to reward and penalize workers if necessary? How do other people manage floor workers in other factories?
I understand the stress but it sounds like you are going through growth pains as a manager! You should take whatever break you need 100%, but if you plan to stay in the industry maybe you could read up more about managing workers before you start your next job, or try to work under a boss that can set you up properly for success!
