A 25-year-old Singaporean man tragically lost his life in the early hours of May 27 after being flung off his motorcycle from an overpass near the Johor Causeway in Malaysia.
According to Malaysian authorities, the accident happened at around 3:20am along Jalan Tambak Johor, on the Malaysian side of the Causeway leading towards Singapore.
The victim, who was reportedly working as a nurse, had been riding from Bukit Chagar towards the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar checkpoint when the fatal incident occurred.
Rider Allegedly Entered Wrong Lane Before Crash
Preliminary police investigations revealed that the motorcyclist may have accidentally entered a lane meant for cars before attempting to make a U-turn against the flow of traffic.
During the manoeuvre, he allegedly lost control of the motorcycle and skidded towards the right side of the road. The bike then slammed into a road barrier before sliding into a sharp bend on the elevated roadway.
The impact caused the rider to be thrown off the motorcycle and over the side of the overpass, which was believed to be about 10 metres high.
Police later found the man lying on the lorry lane below, which connects Singapore to Malaysia.
He suffered severe head injuries along with multiple wounds and abrasions across his body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities Conducting Further Investigations
The victim’s body was subsequently sent to a local hospital for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Johor Bahru South District Police said investigations into the accident are still ongoing.
The incident has since drawn attention online, especially among Singaporean commuters and motorcyclists who frequently travel between Singapore and Johor Bahru for work, leisure, and daily commuting.
Road safety experts have repeatedly reminded drivers and riders to remain alert while navigating the busy Causeway routes, especially during late-night and early-morning hours when visibility may be lower and fatigue could become a factor.
The roads leading to the checkpoint are also known to be confusing for some motorists due to multiple lane splits and heavy traffic conditions during peak periods.
Many netizens expressed condolences online after learning that the victim was a healthcare worker, with several describing the incident as heartbreaking and urging fellow riders to stay cautious while travelling across the border.
