On Aug 22, the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, one of the oldest Hindu temples in Singapore over alleged unlawful offences, a police inquiry is propelled by its Commercial Affairs Department is leading the investigation, but said it is “inappropriate” to comment further on the investigation.
The Commissioner of Charities (COC) said in an announcement that it had been alerted of the inquiry and has also propelled its own investigation into the temple under section 8 of the Charities Act, which gives the chief the power to start such investigations into charities.
The COC said it expected response on the management of the temple, which led to it carrying out an evaluation. “The evaluation recognised certain zones of alarm with regard to authority and management, which permit piloting a probe,” it said.
The COC added that it will choose on the next progress of action after the probe.
In the period in-between, spiritual happenings will not be affected and the temple can carry on with its processes and day-to-day services, COC said, adding that processes will be put in place to guarantee the temple is correctly taken care of.
In the Little India area the temple at 141 Serangoon Road is a well-known landmark and it built by early Indian migrant workers to be one of the oldest temples in Singapore.
