Typhoon Danas is fast approaching Taiwan, with its strongest impact expected from today through tomorrow morning. According to the Central Weather Administration’s latest 24-hour rainfall forecast, multiple regions are predicted to experience severe winds and heavy downpours. Officials have warned that 16 counties and cities across Taiwan may meet the criteria for suspension of work and classes.

The storm’s violent winds are forecast to hit coastal townships in New Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu City and County, Miaoli, Taichung, Changhua, Yunlin, Chiayi County and City, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung’s coastal areas and Hengchun Peninsula, as well as Orchid Island, Green Island, and Penghu. Residents in these areas should brace for extreme weather conditions.

Mountain Areas Face Heightened Flood Risks

In addition to strong winds, the Central Weather Administration highlighted that mountainous areas in several counties — including Miaoli, Taichung, Nantou, Yunlin, Chiayi, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and Taitung — are likely to receive rainfall surpassing thresholds that could trigger class or work suspensions. These areas may see accumulated rainfall exceeding 200 millimetres, greatly increasing the risk of landslides, road blockages, and flash floods.

According to Taiwan’s guidelines for natural disaster response, local governments have the discretion to announce work and class suspensions. The criteria include the typhoon’s storm radius likely crossing the region within four hours, with average wind speeds reaching at least Level 7 or gusts exceeding Level 10. Alternatively, if rainfall in mountainous regions is forecast to exceed 200 millimetres, or 350 millimetres in low-lying areas — or if there’s imminent danger or ongoing damage — local authorities may decide to call off work and classes.

Authorities Urge Vigilance as Typhoon Approaches

The Central Weather Administration has urged the public to stay updated with official announcements and to exercise caution, especially those living in flood-prone areas. Schools, parents, and businesses have been reminded to monitor alerts closely, as the situation can evolve rapidly with Typhoon Danas expected to strengthen further as it nears Taiwan.

Taiwanese Premier Cho Jung-tai inspected the Central Disaster Response Centre this morning, stressing the need for both central and local governments to tighten preparations. He called on officials to fully leverage technology for weather monitoring and ensure communities are ready for compound disasters caused by powerful winds and heavy rain.

Residents are strongly encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel and secure loose outdoor objects. Emergency supplies should be prepared in advance. Authorities also reminded the public that even after the typhoon passes, risks of landslides and road collapses can persist.
