Taiwanese authorities are currently in the process of searching for three individuals who have been reported missing following an earthquake that struck Taiwan on April 3, 2024. Among the missing are a married Singaporean couple, Sim Hwee Kok and Neo Siew Choo, both aged 47.
The couple was last seen in Taroko National Park in Hualien, Taiwan. The death toll from the earthquake has risen to 16, as three more bodies were discovered in Taroko National Park on April 10. The bodies were found while authorities were attempting to retrieve two other bodies that were buried under rocks along the Shakadang Trail.
In addition to Sim and Neo, three other individuals remain missing along the same trail. According to local news reports, the Singaporean couple was seen in the background of a German tourist’s video.
The earthquake that struck Taiwan on April 3 was the strongest the island has experienced since 1999, when a 7.6-magnitude earthquake hit the island and resulted in the deaths of approximately 2,400 people, as well as damage to or destruction of 50,000 buildings. At least 1,133 people have been injured as a result of the earthquake that occurred on April 3, 2024.
The earthquake was most strongly felt in Hualien, the city that is closest to the quake’s epicenter.
The search for the missing individuals is ongoing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
