75-year-old former presidential candidate Tan Kin Lian, is threatening to take legal action against content creators for making “malicious and harmful” content about him.
A Defamation Dilemma
The crux of this dispute revolves around the contents shared on various social media platforms over the past few weeks. According to Tan Kin Lian, he claimed that these contents have insulted and defamed him, and he warned the content creators to remove the content immediately.
He posted a video on his TikTok page yesterday, with the word “warning” emblazoned at the top of the video as he issued a warning to the content creators.
He stated, “These contents have caused serious damage to my reputation. I advise these creators to remove them immediately.”
However, the message did not stop there. Tan Kin Lian made it clear that if the offensive content remained on these websites, he would instruct his legal team to send letters demanding apologies and an undertaking not to repeat the harmful actions, and for (the) message to be broadcast to all their audience.
Moreover, he insisted that the legal fees incurred will also be borne by the content creators and if they don’t comply, he will sue them in court and if he succeeds, the damages will be in “tens or hundred of thousands of dollars.”
He firmly stated, “I don’t intend to cause financial hardship to the creators, so I advise them to act now and to remove the harmful and malicious content.”
Tan also added that “some of the content creators have hidden their identities” and he “intends to locate them and the damages will be increased according to the trouble that I have taken.”
He then closed off his warning video by advising the creators to “act now to stop further damage to my reputation and to avoid any financial penalty that they have to face.”
