TANJONG PAGAR: AFTER CRASHING THEY REMOVE ITEMS & ABANDONED THE VEHICLE

The Singapore Police Force is appealing for information on a driver and his passenger who fled the scene of a serious three-vehicle accident along Tanjong Pagar Road. The incident occurred at approximately 6.30pm on 26 June, when a modified Honda collided violently with a ComfortDelGro taxi, leaving both vehicles with significant damage.

Eyewitness reports described a chaotic scene: the Honda T-boned the taxi on its right side, creating a large dent and causing its airbags to deploy. The impact left the Honda with its hood crumpled and headlights shattered, while its bumper was torn loose. Another vehicle, a Toyota, was also involved but sustained minimal damage and came to a halt further along the road, reported Shin Min Daily News

Police investigations revealed that the Honda driver and his passenger hastily abandoned the car before authorities arrived. Witnesses noted the driver removing items from the Honda, including a bag, before fleeing on foot. Shockingly, the Honda was left with the handbrake disengaged, which led it to roll and strike the taxi again.

Witnesses Share Accounts of Dramatic Crash on Busy Tanjong Pagar Road

A 43-year-old supervisor of a nearby restaurant, Ms Chen, recounted how the taxi may have prevented the Honda from crashing into her establishment, potentially averting an even greater tragedy. Another bystander, a waitress named Lily, described how the Honda and Toyota collided before the Honda inexplicably smashed into the taxi moments later.

According to additional eyewitness accounts, the driver of the Honda appeared disoriented but quickly grabbed belongings from the car. He then fled together with his passenger, leaving both injured and shocked victims behind. These startling revelations have raised concerns about reckless driving and road safety enforcement in Singapore’s bustling Central Business District.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force confirmed that a 68-year-old taxi driver and a 60-year-old male driver of the Toyota were transported to Singapore General Hospital conscious but with injuries. The incident site, located at the junction of Tanjong Pagar Road and Cook Street, saw traffic diversions until the vehicles were cleared around 10pm.

Investigations Ongoing Into Hit-and-Run Incident Near Site of 2021 Fatal Crash

Police have classified the case as a hit-and-run involving reckless or dangerous driving. They have launched an active search for the two individuals who fled, urging members of the public with any information to come forward. Road safety experts are also highlighting the need for heightened vigilance, particularly on stretches like Tanjong Pagar Road, which has a history of severe accidents.

This crash occurred close to 37 Tanjong Pagar Road—the scene of the infamous February 2021 accident, where a BMW crashed at excessive speed and burst into flames, killing five people. That tragedy was attributed to drink driving and speeds nearly three times the legal limit, underscoring persistent dangers on this busy road.

As investigations continue, authorities stress the importance of safe driving practices and responsible behaviour at accident scenes. Motor insurance providers also remind motorists of the potential legal and financial consequences of fleeing after an accident, a factor that can result in loss of insurance coverage and criminal charges.
