A Tampines resident recently shared a distressing encounter with a taxi driver, alleging reckless driving that left her frightened and even caused her to vomit, according to Shin Min Daily News and 8world News.
The Nightmare Ride
Setting Off from Changi Airport
The passenger, a 34-year-old woman named Ms Wu, had just returned from a business trip to the Philippines and decided to take a cab home on 23 June. At around 6:30 PM, she entered a black-colored premium Prime Taxi cab and asked the driver if he could take her to Tampines. The driver agreed, and they set off from Changi Airport.
Initially, the driver, who appeared to be in his 50s, was friendly and even assisted Ms Wu with her luggage. However, as soon as he realized her destination was Tampines, his attitude reportedly changed. He claimed that his taxi was “very expensive” compared to regular taxis, emphasizing the higher flag-down fare and rates.
The situation escalated when they left Terminal 3. The taxi driver allegedly drove recklessly, abruptly accelerating on the winding road outside the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Ms Wu felt that the driver’s actions were deliberate, as he seemed to check her reaction through the rear-view mirror.
Throughout the journey, the cabby continued to exhibit dangerous driving behavior. He frequently accelerated, then abruptly slowed down, and even overtook other vehicles on the busy road.
Concerned for her safety, Ms Wu urged him to drive carefully, advising him against driving when angry due to the potential risks involved. However, the driver dismissed her concerns and refused to listen to her.
Upon reaching her home, Ms Wu paid the fare amounting to S$22.80 for a journey covering a distance of 8.1 kilometers. Despite being a self-proclaimed brave person, she felt terrified and overwhelmed by the experience. Moreover, the reckless driving had left her feeling dizzy, ultimately leading to her vomiting.
Disturbed by the incident, Ms Wu decided to report the driver’s behavior to the police. She believed that the driver’s actions were not only dangerous but also unacceptable, regardless of any personal dissatisfaction he may have had with his job.
She emphasized the potential danger such driving could pose to elderly passengers or those with pre-existing health conditions. Being aware of the challenges faced by taxi drivers, as her father is one, she usually tips generously.
The police have confirmed the receipt of Ms Wu’s report and are currently investigating the incident.
