The tragic event unfolded when Anuwat confessed to a community leader about the murder, stating he had abandoned Phuwanon’s body in a forested area near the entrance of the Pho Chai district.
Authorities from the Pho Chai Police Station were called to investigate the scene, where they discovered Phuwanon’s body with multiple stab wounds to her chest, back, and neck, as well as deep cuts on her forehead and leg. Her motorcycle and personal belongings, including a 30-centimeter knife used in the attack, were found nearby. Inside her bag, officers also discovered 3,456 baht in cash.
Anuwat alleged that Phuwanon had tricked him into meeting her and then sexually assaulted him by touching him inappropriately. He claimed that this frightened him, leading him to stab her repeatedly. However, Phuwanon’s uncle expressed skepticism about this narrative, suggesting that a financial dispute might have been the real motive for the murder, as she had recently earned tens of thousands of baht from online gambling.
Phuwanon’s friend, Cherry, shared that she had seen Phuwanon video calling Anuwat several times, although she could not confirm the nature of their relationship. Police escorted Anuwat to the scene for a reenactment of the events before taking him in for further questioning. While Anuwat’s claims may provide a possible motive, authorities are also investigating the potential for a romantic connection between the two.
This incident is part of a troubling trend of violence against the transgender community in Thailand. Just last month, another transwoman was murdered in Pattaya by a Chinese man, who was arrested while attempting to flee the country. The suspect in that case bizarrely claimed he had only been “playing” with the dismembered body after the murder, raising further concerns about the safety of transgender individuals in the region.
As investigations continue, the community is left grappling with the implications of these violent acts and the urgent need for greater protection and understanding for marginalized groups.
