Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam said on a Facebook post on July 19, that politics in Singapore has changed permanently.

He said that the outcome was good for Singapore, because:
- The People’s Action Party (PAP) secured a solid mandate, which means the party is trusted to do what is best for Singaporeans.
- The swing in votes is leading the party to review its own “game”, to win the hearts and minds of a changing electorate.
Shanmugaratnam said that the aim of the government as well as the opposition must be to serve the interests of Singaporeans through policies that can withstand the rigours of time, instead of garnering the popular vote through telling people what they want to hear or making empty-promises about benefits without revealing what the costs are and who bears them.
