Actor Peter Cullen Dies At 85, Best Known As Voice Of Optimus Prime & Eeyore

Canadian actor and voice artist Peter Cullen, whose distinctive deep voice brought iconic characters including Optimus Prime and Eeyore to life, has died aged 85.

Cullen died at his home in Los Angeles on Wednesday, 26 August, with his agent confirming the news to The Hollywood Reporter. His family said he had passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones.

In a statement, Cullen’s family also remembered the impact he had on generations of fans and encouraged them to honour his legacy through compassion, integrity and loyalty.

Peter Cullen Became The Voice Of Optimus Prime

Cullen began his professional career in television and voice acting during the late 1960s, eventually building a career that spanned more than six decades.

While he worked across animated television series, films, commercials and video games, it was his portrayal of Autobot leader Optimus Prime that made him internationally recognisable.

Cullen was first cast as Optimus Prime when the original Transformers animated series launched in 1984. His commanding yet measured delivery became closely associated with the character and helped establish the personality of the heroic Autobot leader.

His connection with Optimus Prime continued long after the original animated series ended. Cullen returned to voice the character in the live-action Transformers film released in 2007, directed by Michael Bay.

Returned As Optimus Prime For Decades

Cullen continued voicing Optimus Prime in subsequent Transformers films, animated productions and video games.

His later appearances included Transformers: The Last Knight in 2017, followed by Bumblebee and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

His contribution to the franchise was formally recognised in 2010, when Hasbro selected Cullen as one of the first four human inductees into the Transformers Hall of Fame.

For many fans, Cullen’s voice became inseparable from the character, with his performance helping define Optimus Prime across multiple generations of Transformers audiences.

However, Cullen’s career extended well beyond the world of Transformers.

He was also widely recognised for voicing Eeyore, the gloomy but much-loved donkey from Disney’s Winnie the Pooh productions. His portrayal gave the character its familiar slow and melancholic delivery.

Cullen also provided Eeyore’s voice for Disney’s The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh attraction at Disneyland in California after it opened in 2003.

Among his other credits were roles involving characters from Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, including Dr Bruce Banner and the Hulk, as well as the Red Skull and other characters in Spider-Man.

Six-Decade Career Across Film & Television

His voice work was not limited to animation. Cullen provided creature vocal effects for the alien creature in the 1987 science-fiction action film Predator.

He also voiced King Kong in the 1976 remake of King Kong and appeared as Mario in segments of the animated series Saturday Supercade.

Across his lengthy career, Cullen worked on animated programmes, feature films, video games, trailers, commercials and theme park attractions.

Despite his extensive body of work, Optimus Prime remained the role most strongly associated with him.

His family has asked fans to remember Cullen not only for his famous characters, but also for the values they believed he represented.

One phrase closely linked to Cullen and Optimus Prime has become particularly fitting following his death: “Be strong enough to be gentle.”

For millions of Transformers and Winnie the Pooh fans, Cullen’s unmistakable voice will remain part of the childhood memories and entertainment experiences that shaped generations.
