A post have been circulating online stating that Member of Parliament Tin Pei Ling said that each citizen or PR received $23,225 from the government for COVID relief.
Tin Pei Ling has took to her Facebook to debunk the false claims. She did not say that the amount of $23,225 was a direct cash payment but instead was per capita basis which also includes direct and indirect support from the government. She basically took the amount of $93 billion and divided it by the current population which got her the amount of $23,225.
She also stated that she did not suggest taxes to be raised after the outbreak. She only said that “our pioneers took more than 50 years to save up this pot of gold because they wanted to protect their children and future generations, and we had a duty to use this pot of gold wisely”. After all, we want to ensure that “our children and their children will continue to have this asset to fall back on when they face the crisis of their generation”.
Here are some comments from Singaporeans which were taken from Tin Pei Ling’s Facebook page.
