Hello all i’m a future tourist. I am currently picking the area to stay and Geylang sounds cool. Would you recommend this area for a budget 20 year-old tourist, is it safe at night? tips for Geylang 🙂

- Unless you’re on a really really tight budget, avoid hotels in the Geylang area that are named after flowers, scents, and numbers.
- (OP) Thank you, noted 🙂
- Singapore is relatively safe however Geylang is generally the seedier area. Nothing should happen if you remain alert like you would in any big city.
That’s said, it’s actually pretty far from all the tourist stuff and generally a little bit more difficult to travel around. You should be able to get accommodations (hostels) nearer to town that are only slightly more expensive.- (OP) Thank you la, I choose Geylang so I try experience more authentic Singapore and try see what life in SG is like.
- I would not say that Geylang is an authentic representation of Singapore. There are many non-Singaporeans living there at the moment (you might find mostly foreign workers from Mainland China, Bangladesh and India around).
- It slightly annoys me a bit when I hear (Western) people saying that they think Geylang is the authentic Singapore (yes heard this from European friends as well) because it seems that there exists still an archaic perception of Asia as being less developed than the West so these areas that are exhibiting less progressive characteristics in accordance to Eurocentric worldviews are then considered “authentically Asia”.

- If you are a backpacker, you might find more activities / culture in Bugis, Chinatown, Clarke Quay area. There are hostels and bars scattered in these areas too.
