Janet Yellen, the U.S Treasury Secretary, saod that the US is prepared to impose sanctions on China if it moves aggressively against Taiwan, as reported by PBS.
However, she said that at the moment, there is no need to sanction China for its trade relationship with Russia.
Yellen was speaking at the House Financial Services Committee and giving her testimony on the international financial system.
She was questioned about China by U.S representatives, with the country viewing Taiwan as part of its territory.
China has also not ruled out the use of force to take control of Taiwan.
Yellen said that should Beijing move aggressively towards Taiwan, the U.S is prepared to impose sanctions on them.
She said: “I believe we’ve shown that we can in the case of Russia. I think you should not doubt our ability to resolve to do the same in other situations.”
