A Ukrainian soldier sacrificed himself by blowing up a bridge to slow down the advancement of Russian tanks during one of the battles with the Russian forces.
The Ukrainian soldier, Vitaly Skakun Volodymyrovych, was deployed at the Henichesk bridge in the region of Kherson and it was one of the entry points from Crimea.
Vitaly’s mission was to blow up the bridge to slow down the Russian tanks who were entering from the bridge.
He didn’t manage to get away from the explosion before it blew up and was killed in the end.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine shared the story of Vitaly in a Facebook statement, saying that he had told his “brothers in arms” that he was going to blow up the bridge.
The bridge then exploded shortly after, and the statement highlighted how his sacrifice allowed the Ukrainian unit an opportunity to regroup, relocate and reorganize their defenses.
He also managed to slow down the advancement of the Russian forces and tanks.
The Ukrainian authorities are looking at awarding Vitaly with posthumous honours for his bravery and sacrifice.
RIP.
