A woman recently got into an unfriendly situation for trying to pay for coffee with 2 X 5 cents coins.

She said:

“Blk 291 Yishun Street 22 – Best Cafe

Went to buy a cup of Kopi O at 910pm which is priced at $1.20. Gave $1 Coin, 2x 5cent and 1x10cen to this Rude and loud Vietnamese Lady whom immediately SHOUTED and say I DO NOT ACCEPT 5CENTS, GO AWAY. I AM NOT SELLING TO YOU and pour away the Kopi into the sink.

5cents not money? THat the problem with hawkers nowaday not accepting 5cents.”

Here are what netizens think:

  • 2x 5¢ is perfectly acceptable to use for payment. Even $1.20 all in 5¢ is legal tender, as the law provides that no merchant is allowed to choose coins or notes in exchange for goods and services. In addition, it is an offence not to allow it. Hence, a customer is perfectly acceptable to call the police on this issue. That lady is also very rude and her behaviour is unacceptable!
  • It’s ok buddy, just bring all your 5c and other coins to supermarket self service payment. Not very kind of this coffee stall seller though, let her be…
  • Nowadays no retailers takes 5 cents except Sheng Siong Supermarket via cash machine payment. The problem does not lies in the retailers but rather the bank that charges the handling of the 5 cents. So it is not worth to bank in the 5 cents cos the cost is higher than the value.
