In the realm of weddings, the expectation is that guests will leave with full hearts and even fuller stomachs, carrying cherished memories of a joyous celebration.
Regrettably, an event in China this month shattered this joyful norm, replacing it with a distressing tale of food poisoning.
A Celebratory Gathering Gone Awry
On the 7th of September, in Linfen, Shanxi province, a family decided to host a grand wedding banquet at a local hotel. Inviting over 400 relatives and friends, they anticipated a day filled with love, laughter, and sumptuous cuisine. Little did they know that their celebration would take a dire turn.
As the day unfolded, the guests reveled in the festivities. However, after indulging in a hearty lunch, a wave of discomfort swept through the gathering.
Fever, diarrhea, and vomiting became the unwelcome companions of numerous attendees. The joyous occasion had suddenly transformed into a medical emergency.
Close to a staggering 100 guests fell victim to food poisoning following the meal. Some were so severely affected that they required hospitalization, while those with milder symptoms attempted to self-medicate.
This unfortunate incident spared no one, affecting the youngest attendee at just four years old and the eldest, who was between 70 and 80 years of age.
The Tearful Account of Mr. Lu
One individual, Mr. Lu, who had organized the event, was left overwhelmed with guilt and sorrow as he recounted the tragic incident.
Tears streamed down his face as he expressed the immense pressure he felt due to what had occurred. The wedding banquet had morphed into a distressing memory that would haunt him for a long time.
Hotel’s Response and Ongoing Investigations
In the aftermath, the hotel’s catering department took swift action. They retained samples of the food and promptly sent them for inspection to unravel the mystery behind the food poisoning.
A staff member emphatically asserted that the hotel bore no responsibility for the incident. They pointed out that the victims were close friends with the host family and had also consumed food at the host family’s home that morning.
Currently, the restaurant remains closed as investigations continue. Authorities are diligently working to ascertain the source of the contamination.
The Market Supervision and Administration Bureau of Quwo County issued a notice on Tuesday, September 19th, disclosing that approximately 470 people had attended the banquet at Quwo Hotel.
From September 8th to September 12th, Quwo County People’s Hospital recorded 61 cases of diarrhea, which included nine inpatients and 52 outpatients. Notably, all of these individuals had attended the ill-fated banquet.
The good news is that as of September 17th, all patients have made a full recovery. However, the investigation continues.
