A Singaporean wife recently shared on Facebook to tell all wives to stop asking who is more important, the wife or the mother. She even gave her reasons for this “chicken or egg” question.

Stop asking or even thinking who is more important to your husband – his mother or you. Whatever the answer, you will still end up miserable.
If the answer is you, he is probably lying. If he’s telling the truth, do you think someone who’s not filial to his own mother is going to treat you well for the rest of your life? How will it reflect on his character and values?
90% of the time, the answer is not you, but his mother. The 10% is for cases where the mother abandoned him, neglected her maternal duties, or has passed on. Men of marriageable age now (20s – 30s) would have mothers from a generation who are generally dutiful mothers, some who even stayed in unhappy or abusive marriages for the sake of their children (like my own mother), and even some who singlehandedly brought up the children as a single mother. The love and duty for their children would put young modern mothers today to shame.
Compared to his mother who fed, cleaned, tended, soothed, cried, laughed with him for 20, 30 years, how do you expect to replace her as the most important person in his heart just by dating him for a few years, buying a few presents, signing on the marriage certificate? Face it, his mother will always occupy the most special place in his heart. Like I said, if a man is really able and willing to replace his mother with you, he’s not a good guy. It may make you feel good, but you’re living with a guy with the wrong values. And what he can do to his mother, he can also do to you.
So stop asking, and cut out the jealousy! If you want to be the most important woman in another man’s heart, give birth to a son, and be a dutiful mother to him for the next 20, 30 years.
