WIFE WALKS IN ON HUSBAND “DOING IT” WITH SOMEONE ELSE

My husband and I have been married for a little over a year (ROM in Aug), and two weeks ago, I walked in on him with another woman right on our bed in our rented condo near East Coast.

I’m obviously wanting to file for divorce immediately, but I am terrified. My husband is a ruthless litigation lawyer in a top Singapore firm, which makes me extremely nervous about how this will play out. I’m not currently employed because I was still completing my degree when we got married, so I have zero independent income. On top of that, we don’t have joint bank accounts, and we don’t own any real estate together yet (we were waiting for a BTO/EC launch).

Because of his legal background, he’s already acting completely unfazed and cold, asserting that I’ll walk away with nothing. So my questions for those familiar with Singapore’s Family Justice Courts (FJC) are:

  1. Can I even file for divorce yet? I know Singapore law usually requires couples to be married for at least 3 years before filing for divorce under the Women’s Charter, unless there is “exceptional hardship” or “exceptional depravity.” Does catching him committing adultery qualify as exceptional hardship to file before the 3-year mark, or do I have to file for legal separation first?
  2. Am I entitled to anything? Since we have no joint accounts or owned property, how are matrimonial assets split for such a short marriage?
  3. Will I be granted maintenance (alimony)? Under the Women’s Charter, can an unemployed wife in a short, childless marriage get interim or long-term maintenance, especially since he was the sole breadwinner and the cheating party?
  4. Am I crazy for asking these questions? Am I being unrealistic thinking I can get financial support or a fair settlement after just one year of marriage without property?

My husband is a ruthless lawyer and I’m honestly afraid of getting completely screwed over by this monster. Getting married to a lawyer and going through a divorce later is proving to be the ultimate nightmare. Any legal advice, recommendations for tough family lawyers in SG, or legal aid suggestions (like LAB) would be greatly appreciated!
