A 54-year-old woman, Ms Huang, accidentally transferred $2,888 to a florist instead of her own savings account, according to Shin Min Daily News.
The woman, who works as a salesperson, said that she always transfers a part of her salary to another separate savings account every month, in order to stop herself from overspending.
However, on 18 January, she was doing the same thing when she later realised that she had transferred the money to someone else instead of herself.
She said that she was making the money transfer at about 7am that day, and the lights were off in her living room.
Upon realising her extravagant mistake, Huang immediately told her son about what happened and contacted the bank to ask for help.
The bank told her that she had to wait a week for them to try and get in touch with the recipient of the money and that it could take up to 3 weeks for the money to be returned to her.
Huang didn’t know who she had sent the money to because the name of the recipient was not reflected in the bank account but managed to find out that the account belonged to a florist after getting help from a friend.
She had previously bought a flower wreath from them and last contacted them in November 2022.
She then called the florist company but nobody answered, so she texted them and they denied taking the money, saying that she had the wrong person.
Huang then sent them a screenshot of the transaction but got no reply, and when she tried to call them again, she found that her calls couldn’t get through anymore.
She said that the bank has issued two letters to them so far, requesting for the money to be returned but thus far, she has received nothing from them.
She is waiting for the bank’s instructions on the next steps to take and added that she needs a statement from the bank before she can lodge a police report.
