Discovering unexpected elements in fresh produce is an unpleasant experience, and a recent incident in Singapore took this to an unusual level.
A woman in Singapore, Camilla Oon, posted about the incident on Facebook, sharing that while she was chopping Chinese cabbage purchased from Giant, she stumbled upon a shocking find—a hidden cigarette butt within the folds of xiao bai cai.
The incident sparked attention and led to an investigation by DFI Retail Group (DFI), the parent company of Giant.
The Unpleasant Discovery
The woman shared her startling discovery on the Complaint Singapore Facebook group on December 20. She expressed her dismay, attaching images of her receipt, the plastic packaging, and the cigarette butt nestled within the cut vegetables. The incident raises concerns about the quality control processes in place for fresh produce.
DFI’s Response and Investigation
In response to the incident, DFI Retail Group swiftly conducted an investigation. According to their statement, store checks on other packets of vegetables from the same brand revealed no quality issues. Despite the isolated nature of the incident, DFI reached out to the customer, offering a full refund and expressing sincere apologies for her experience.
Details of the Incident
The woman had purchased three packets of vegetables from a Giant outlet at Ang Mo Kio 316B for S$2. The plastic packaging indicated that the vegetables were sourced from Malaysia. The incident highlights the need for thorough quality checks throughout the supply chain to ensure the safety and satisfaction of customers.
DFI’s Commitment to Customer Safety
DFI emphasized that the health and safety of customers are top priorities. While assuring that the incident was isolated, DFI pledged to work closely with the supplier to uphold the high-quality standards expected by customers. The swift response and commitment to addressing the issue reflect the company’s dedication to maintaining customer trust.
