A 23-year-old woman, Romane Hourcastagnou, plunged about 1km to her death after her parachute failed to open during a skydiving activity in Strasbourg, France.
According to Dernières Nouvelles d’Alsace (DNA), she took to the skies with 10 other experienced skydivers at about 8.25pm, on 6 May.
The plane dropped them over the landing zone at a height of about 1km, of 3,300 feet, and everything was pretty much fine during the free fall.
However, when it was time to deploy her parachute, it didn’t open and she failed to perform an emergency manouvre, resulting in the woman plunging to the ground within seconds.
The other skydivers at the scene tried to help her but she was already dead, as reported by The Mirror.
Emergency workers were then called to the scene and she was confirmed dead, and her body was then sent to a local morgue.
At the time of writing, the local authorities are still investigating the incident.
Romane Hourcastagnou was a policewoman who was posted at the Saint Ouen police station, and she has been skydiving in Alsace, with over a hundred jumps to her credit.
Her funeral was held on 18 May and she was then buried in the Polygone cemetery.
