A netizen shared in a TikTok post on 29 March that her mother found a lump of tissue paper inside her sugarcane juice drink that they bought from a Balestier hawker stall.
Her mother then subsequently fell sick the next day, and they lodged a report to the Singapore Food Agency (SFA), as well as the police.
The netizen said in the TikTok post that they bought an iced sugarcane juice drink from a hawker stall in Balestier when they found the disgusting tissue inside.
At the time, they didn’t know that their drink was contaminated because the cup was opaque, and they only saw the lump of tissue when the older woman was almost finished with her beverage.
The mother had initially thought that it was a slice of lemon because the tissue was at the bottom of the cup, under the cubes of ice.
She even asked the netizen’s father if he had mistakenly ordered a cup of lemon sugarcane juice instead for her.
She then used a pair of chopsticks to pick out the “lemon slice” from the bottom of the cup and realised that it was actually a lump of tissue paper.
The horrified family then immediately informed the stall owner, before lodging a report with the police and the SFA.
It was not revealed how the tissue managed to get inside the cup or if the cup had been used previously by someone else, but the netizen’s mother fell sick the next day with diarrhoea, vomiting and stomach cramps.
The netizen warned other consumers to be careful when they are eating out so that other people won’t suffer the same fate as them and find foreign ingredients inside their food.
They also urged stall owners to be more careful when preparing their customer’s food and/or drinks.
