The Customer’s Experience

In a now-deleted Facebook post within the Complaint Singapore group, a customer shared her unsettling experience with a packet of frozen squid bought from the Sheng Siong outlet in Block 154A Bukit Batok West Avenue 8. According to the posted receipt, the purchase was made on Thursday, December 14th, at a cost of S$6.99.

The customer was shocked to find what she described as an “umbrella hook” in the squid, a term coined due to its resemblance to an upside-down umbrella. The metal hook, as depicted in the photo she posted, appeared extremely sharp, raising concerns about potential harm if ingested.

The customer, emphasizing the “extremely sharp” nature of the metal hook, urged fellow shoppers to exercise caution when cleaning seafood. This incident serves as a stark reminder that, despite the convenience of frozen seafood, there can be hidden dangers that consumers need to be aware of during the preparation process.

Sheng Siong’s Response

Following the customer’s alarming discovery, Sheng Siong promptly issued an apology and a full refund. In their response to the incident, the supermarket expressed their regret over the incident and assured the public that an internal investigation has been initiated to delve into the matter.
