In a news report by Lianhe Wanbao, a pregnant woman was enroute to the hospital to deliver her baby but because she was stuck in a traffic jam on the Central Expressway (CTE), she was left with no other option but to give birth in her car.
The traffic jam lasted for about 2 hours and was caused by a collision between a car and a container lorry, which resulted in only one lane of the expressway being available for cars to pass.
A witness said: “The baby couldn’t wait, the woman just had to give birth in the car. Her husband ran to look for the police for help, shouting that his wife had just given birth.”
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) were originally alerted to the scene of the car accident, but a few SCDF personnel and police followed the husband back to his car to render assistance.
The woman and her newborn child were brought to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital in an SCDF ambulance shortly after.
As the for car accident, a 34 year old lorry driver and his 38 year old male passenger sustained injuries and were brought to Singapore General Hospital conscious.
At the time of writing, police investigations are underway.
