A 47-year-old woman was taken to hospital after being struck by a van that reportedly skidded, became airborne and crashed near a school in Bishan on Friday afternoon.
The accident occurred along Bishan Street 13 at about 1.10pm on July 10, near Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary School and the Bishan Ridges housing estate.
Witnesses at the scene described a dramatic sequence of events, claiming the van appeared to lift off the ground before colliding with part of a pedestrian crossing structure and subsequently hitting the woman.
According to photos circulating online, the van sustained extensive damage and was seen lying on its side after the crash. Debris from a nearby structure was also scattered across the area.
Witness Rushed To Assist Injured Woman
A 50-year-old motorist who was waiting at a nearby traffic junction said he witnessed the incident unfold.
He claimed the van skidded before becoming airborne and striking the roof of a pedestrian crossing. Moments later, it crashed into the woman.
The motorist immediately went to assist the victim and found her visibly distressed. He said she was crying and appeared to have suffered a serious leg injury.
According to the witness, the woman told him she had been on her way to pick up her employer’s child from school when the accident happened.
He added that the outcome could have been far worse had the incident occurred slightly later in the day when more students and parents would likely have been present in the area.
Driver Arrested Following Accident
The Singapore Police Force said officers were alerted to the accident along Bishan Street 13 at around 1.10pm on July 10.
The 47-year-old female pedestrian was conveyed conscious to hospital for treatment.
Police also confirmed that the van driver, a 27-year-old man, was arrested for driving without due care and attention causing grievous hurt.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
The accident has sparked concern among residents and motorists due to the severity of the crash and its proximity to a school, with many noting that the consequences could have been significantly more serious if the area had been crowded with students during dismissal time.
Authorities have not released further details on the woman’s condition at the time of writing.
