A 31-year-old woman has died after being attacked by a massive alligator while cooling off in a Florida river during a hiking trip with her boyfriend.

The victim, identified as Brittany Clark from Orlando, was swimming in the Econlockhatchee River at Little Big Econ State Forest when the attack occurred. Authorities said she had entered shallow water with her boyfriend and a friend when a large alligator suddenly struck.

According to investigators, the alligator grabbed Clark by the arm before dragging her underwater in what officials described as a “death roll” — a spinning manoeuvre used by alligators to overpower prey.

Boyfriend Fought Alligator in Desperate Rescue Attempt

Clark’s boyfriend, Chance Allison, reportedly rushed to her aid and tried to pull her free from the reptile’s jaws.

Officials said he managed to free one of her arms, but the alligator attacked again, causing catastrophic injuries. A frantic 911 call captured the horrifying moments as those at the scene desperately pleaded for help. Reports indicate that both of Clark’s arms suffered severe trauma during the attack.

Despite efforts to stop the bleeding and keep her alive until emergency responders arrived, Clark succumbed to her injuries while being transported to hospital. The medical examiner later determined that she died from multiple traumatic injuries sustained during the attack.

Friends and family described Clark as an adventurous outdoor enthusiast who loved motorcycles, nature and spending time with loved ones. Tributes have since poured in on social media following news of her death.

Authorities Capture and Euthanise Suspected Alligator

Following the fatal attack, wildlife officers launched an operation in the area and captured two large alligators measuring approximately 12.5 and 13 feet in length.

The animals were euthanised and removed from the area as authorities investigate which one was responsible for the deadly attack. DNA testing is expected to help determine the exact animal involved.

Wildlife officials stressed that there was no indication the group had provoked the alligator before the attack. The incident occurred in shallow water and is being treated as a rare but tragic encounter between humans and wildlife.

Florida is home to more than one million alligators, although fatal attacks remain uncommon. Authorities have renewed calls for residents and visitors to remain vigilant when entering rivers, lakes and other freshwater habitats where alligators may be present.
