In a shocking case that unfolded in court,
45-year-old Sukina Abdul Latip, a woman who operated a brothel under the guise of a beauty salon and was earning money as the pimp for prostitutes, was sentenced on Tuesday to 4 months and 4 weeks imprisonment and fined $6,500, according to TODAY.
She pleaded guilty to three charges under the Women’s Charter, with eight additional similar charges taken into consideration during her sentencing.
The identities of the women involved in Sukina’s illicit activities remain protected by a court order.
Background
Sukina rented a unit in 2018, along Teck Chye Terrace, situated off Upper Serangoon Road, purportedly to provide facial and beauty services.
She recruited both local and foreign staff, assuming responsibility for obtaining work permits for her beauty salon workers.
However, it was discovered that the women were actually hired to work as prostitutes, offering obscene services to customers for monetary gain.
Sukina played a pivotal role in sourcing and matching customers with the women, facilitating this operation through a WhatsApp chat group. She served as the liaison between the women and the clientele.
Under the terms of their agreement with Sukina, the women were entitled to retain the money they earned, but they were required to pay Sukina S$50 from each transaction to use the rooms within the unit for their activities.
From October 28, 2020, to September 30, 2021, Sukina received no less than S$4,000 from one woman and approximately S$2,500 from another.
The case unraveled on the afternoon of September 30, 2021, when law enforcement conducted a raid on the Teck Chye Terrace unit following information about suspected illegal prostitution activities.
The workers employed by Sukina were apprehended during the operation.
During the investigation, the women revealed Sukina’s central role in orchestrating their prostitution services, which led to Sukina’s subsequent arrest the following afternoon at her residence.
