A woman had bought a pair of Apple Airpods Pro Gen 2 for $265 on Carousell and thought she got a good deal seeing as it was $100 cheaper than the market price before finding out that it was fake.
The woman, Jia Xuan, shared on her TikTok page (@jiaxuanwithnof) on Monday about how she got scammed, saying that he had initially though it was a good deal because of the cheap price.
However, the scammer was very convincing (to her) and managed to get her trust and make her believe that the airpods were authentic.
Explaining his reasons for selling the Airpods so cheaply, the scammer told her that he had received it as a birthday gift but he already owned a pair of Airpods Max, so he wanted to sell the new one away.
Jia Xuan thought that his reason for selling was legit enough and agreed to buy it from him, with the scammer requesting for the transaction to be made in cash, saying that it was because he didn’t want his mother to know that he was selling the Airpods.
The woman said that she should have noticed the red flags at the time, because there are no receipts if she paid the man in cash.
The scammer even taught her how to check the serial number of the Airpods and even gave her a pair of Airpods cases for free, which cost about $1.
Jia Xuan said that she even thanked him for the $1 case and she didn’t suspect anything was wrong because the Airpod had connected to her phone.
She added that she even messaged the scammer on Carousell and thanked him for not being a scammer at the time, before later realising that the Airpods were fake after all, when she brought them to an iStudio outlet to repair and fix a malfunction, and a staff member told her that it wasn’t authentic.
