Facebook user Sharul Channa recently posted on Facebook on how her sister got molested but the police only gave the accused a warning. She also cited similar cases where many have escaped with just a warning due to their good background.
Here is what she said in her full story.
I don’t feel safe in Singapore as a woman. I don’t. I keep talking about it because the cases don’t get better. Rape might be taken seriously in this country but molestation and other forms of sexual harassment isn’t.
In every bus and mrt station in Singapore, you can see an advertisement that says :
If you get molested, call the police.
Sure we can call the police but what is the police doing about it?
Just yesterday there was a case in the papers about a woman who got molested in an SIA plane and the judiciary let it go by saying
1. If she was being molested why didn’t she tell the crew, it doesn’t make sense.
2. Story didn’t match up and her account of what happened seemed changed.
3. The accused shared his number with her before the lights of the aircraft were dimmed, why would he do that?
So hence, victim was called UNRELIABLE WITNESS.
So, why should we call the police?
My sister had a man brush his body against her at the escalator not once but twice until she realised, gave chase, told the MRT staff, called the police and made sure she assisted in the investigation.

A year later, she gets a letter that says that accused gets a warning letter.
So, why should we call the police?
Everytime there is a molestation or upskirt video case, we read the sentences in the papers that read :
1. He comes from a good background.
2. He had no criminal history.
3. He is sorry and will change.
4. So as to not destroy his future prospects…Nothing ever happens.
You know what happens to the victim ?
1. Mental trauma
2. Emotional trauma
3. Physical trauma
So, please let me know… why should we call the police? Also, should the culprit only be punished if its RAPE? What about molestation and other forms of physical harassment? So, as a woman in SINGAPORE.. I don’t feel safe and I am angry. If this has happened to you or to people you know, please share their stories so that change can take place.
