A Singaporean woman has been sentenced to three weeks in prison after pleading guilty to attempting to bribe an auxiliary police officer at the Woodlands Checkpoint. The incident occurred on July 17, when 42-year-old Wang Xiping was driving towards Johor Baru and mistakenly entered the bus lane, violating traffic regulations.

According to reports from Shin Min Daily News, when an officer noticed Wang’s infraction, he directed her to return to the checkpoint and use the appropriate lane designated for vehicles. In a bid to evade punishment, Wang first offered the officer RM50, followed by a second offer of S$50 (approximately RM166). However, the officer promptly rejected the bribe, requested her passport, and informed her that the encounter was being recorded on his body-worn camera.

Wang was arrested at the checkpoint around 11:30 AM on the same day and was later released on bail. During the investigation, she claimed that she had mistakenly believed the auxiliary police officer was a Malaysian police officer and that her offer of a bribe stemmed from anxiety and language barriers. She further asserted that she thought the officer had declined her initial offer because he was seeking a larger sum.

Despite her explanations, the prosecution highlighted that Wang had attempted to bribe the officer twice, both incidents occurring within Singapore’s jurisdiction. They recommended a sentence of three to four weeks in prison. In court, Wang pleaded for leniency, citing her responsibilities as a mother to four children, the youngest of whom is under one year old. With her husband currently abroad for work, she requested a postponement of her sentence until November 18 to make necessary arrangements for her children. The district judge granted her request.

This case underscores the serious legal repercussions of attempting to bribe law enforcement officials, as well as the importance of adhering to traffic regulations, particularly at critical checkpoints. The incident serves as a reminder of the legal framework in place to combat corruption and maintain public trust in law enforcement agencies.
