WORKER LOST HIS LEG TO WORKPLACE ACCIDENT, COLLEAGUES CROWDFUND BILLS

The welfare group ItsRainingRaincoats shared the story of a 24-year-old migrant worker Vinoth, who had met with a workplace accident and had to have his leg amputated as a result.

A steel plate had fallen onto his right leg as he was working and crushed it, resulting in his leg needing to be amputated to save his life.

The group revealed that Vinoth’s colleagues have since started a crowdfunding campaign to cover his hospital bills of over $114,000, as well as rehabilitation costs of about $50,000.

Here is the story:

Pray for Vinoth

Vinoth is a 24-year-old migrant worker who came to Singapore in January 2021, full of dreams and seeking a better life to support himself and his family. Unfortunately, on 3 December 2021, he suffered a terrible work accident: not only were his dreams crushed but so was his leg, which had to be amputated to save his life.

A migrant worker friend reached out asking if we could send him some food and snacks which our volunteers have been doing. Vinoth himself speaks very little English. He is in shock and grief since his discharge but our team has been so impressed that despite everything he’s gone through he can still manage a smile for the camera.

His parents back in India have difficulty working: his father recently lost a toe due to diabetes and is sick, while his mother performs ad-hoc duties in a paddy field to sustain his family.

We are aware there is another Give Asia campaign but those proceeds will go directly to NUH to discharge the company’s liabilities towards hospital bills.

The other campaign states that “The company had done all they could in order to help Vinoth, and they are even considering to help Vinoth with a prosthetic leg, and offer him light duties for his employment so Vinoth can still stay in Singapore to work and provide a better life for is family at home.” We are glad to hear this and thankful that Vinoth has been given a wheelchair to move around for now. We also hope that Vinoth will be fitted with the prosthetic leg, and allowed to do some light work while paid his full salary.

Please pray for Vinoth: that this young man will somehow find the strength and means to lead his life on one leg.
