A Sengkang resident shared how she was surprised that her MP, Jamus Lim, wasn’t present to hand out an Edusave award to her daughter.
To which Lim replied that he wasn’t absent because if disinterest, but rather, he was absent because he is not entitled to give out the award.
He explained that MPs for a particular ward are not automatically granted the role of Grassroots Adviser, which is the person who is entitled to give out the Edusave awards.
Lim is an MP from an opposition ward, Sengkang GRC.
Grassroots advisers are appointed by the People’s Association (PA) and are usually comprising of PAP MPs in the PAP wards that they are elected in; unelected PAP candidates, in opposition wards that they contested.
Lim added that despite this, he wrote a letter to the student, encouraging her to keep up the good work.
They also had a mini-ceremony of their own during a Meet-The-People Session, where the student received the letter in person from Lim.
