Legal advice? Threatened to take legal action over inability to pay for water damages to her laptop.

I’m a 18 year old female working two jobs to support my school costs and recently I attended a school competition with other students.

The accident happened while 6+ people were sharing a small table using their laptops for a competition. I turned my laptop to lend it to my friend and accidentally tipped over an unattended open cup of water placed there by the organisers.

I was unaware of the cup being there. The owner of the laptop ran away out of anger after she noticed her laptop was damaged after efforts of trying to save it.

I did not receive communication and was unable to get in touch w her for a few days only to suddenly receive a message from her parents demanding 2.9k for her MacBook Pro repair.

To be clear, my own laptop is reimbursed by school and I am under financial aid from my school. I am completely unable to fork out 2.9k.

A few days later I reached out to her to go to simlim square with her to get her laptop checked and fixed, they quoted $200-$500 but was unable to fix it.

Following this her father told me to either pay for the repair from apple (2.9k) or buy her a new macbook pro for school (2.9k) and informed me if I did not that they would take legal action against me.

Netizens’ comments

  1. To my limited knowledge. They can’t really “sue” you for this small damage. Don’t let them scare you into it. Let them hound you, you don’t have to reply. Don’t give them your address and details.
Not even sure if this could be brought to small claims tribunal. And the open cup of water was placed there by the organizers.”
But first, have you confirmed her macbook in actuality costs 2.9k?
  2. Yea it’s a MacBook Pro 2021 with 1TB storage. They know vague details like my name and my mothers number.
  3. Just ignore, ask them find the organiser. If they can afford to sue you, they won’t even find u for the 2.9k.
  4. How come got money to sue but no money to pay for their daughter’s laptop repair? Losers
  5. The family has no recourse against you, they need to prove that the laptop wasn’t damaged further after the incident.
For your info, electronics shouldn’t be turned on immediately after water damage. So by doing that, the owner has further damaged the Mac book and I bet you she has done it several times to try and revive it. Record the conversation down with an audio app if you want to continue entertaining them.
Otherwise, just block the parents number and move on. Lawyer is a very expensive last resort action that no sane person will undergo.
