Yishun Coffee Shop Drink Stall Owner Argues With Customer Over Bringing Own Water Bottle

A dispute between a family and a drinks stall operator at a Yishun coffee shop has sparked discussion online after footage of the heated exchange circulated on social media.

The incident reportedly took place at around 7.30pm on Aug. 30, when a family of three visited the coffee shop for dinner. A video of the confrontation was subsequently uploaded to Facebook and attracted more than 1,500 comments.

Although the original Facebook post has since been removed, a copy of the footage continued circulating on Reddit. The argument appeared to centre on the coffee shop’s policy against customers bringing outside food and drinks into the premises.

Dispute over personal water bottle

In the video, a man believed to be the drinks stall operator can be heard telling the family that outside food and beverages were not permitted. The restriction reportedly included personal water bottles, with the establishment having displayed a banner stating the policy.

The customer’s wife reportedly explained that the family had brought their own water because they were trying to avoid sweetened drinks. The stall operator responded that individual establishments could impose their own rules.

He further claimed that children were permitted to bring their own drinks, while adults were expected to comply with the coffee shop’s restrictions.

The discussion subsequently became increasingly heated, with the father and his son arguing with the stall operator. The son was seen holding up his phone to record the exchange and appeared to challenge the stall operator to make the first move.

At another point, the stall operator reportedly said that he would remove the water bottle if it was placed on the table. The footage later showed him taking the bottle away from the table before the father retrieved it and placed it back.

Customer gives his side of the incident

The family’s son, who identified himself as Brandon, later shared his account of what happened on Instagram.

He said some details could not be disclosed because a police report had been made and the matter remained under investigation. According to Brandon, his family had been regular customers at the coffee shop and his parents would usually purchase drinks from the stall when they ate there.

He said his father had taken several minutes to find a table after they arrived, while Brandon placed his water bottle on the table before going to the toilet.

Brandon claimed that while he was away, the drinks stall operator approached his father and told him that the bottle could not remain on the table and had to be placed on a chair instead.

His mother was reportedly still queuing for food at the time. Brandon said the family was surprised by the interaction as they had not yet ordered their meal.

Allegations over bottle being thrown

Brandon claimed the disagreement escalated after the coffee shop’s rule was explained. He alleged that the stall operator took the family’s water bottle and threw it onto the pathway outside the coffee shop.

According to his account, this allegedly happened twice. His father retrieved the bottle on the first occasion, while his mother picked it up the second time.

Brandon said his father subsequently became visibly angry. He also alleged that the stall operator challenged his father to fight in a back alley, although his father declined and said any disagreement should instead be addressed openly.

The customer said he did not believe asking customers to resolve a dispute in a secluded area was an appropriate way for a vendor to handle a disagreement.

Both sides reportedly made recordings of the incident. However, Brandon said he would not release his family’s footage while the police investigation was ongoing, leaving the authorities to assess the available evidence.

Family apologises over remarks

Brandon also addressed remarks allegedly made by his father during the confrontation.

He acknowledged that his father had used harsh words, but said they were directed at the stall operator rather than the wider LGBTQ+ community.

The family subsequently apologised to members of the LGBTQ+ community who may have been offended or hurt by the remarks. Brandon said he had friends from the community and that his family genuinely respected them.

The incident has since divided online opinion, with some commenters arguing that the coffee shop operator was entitled to enforce a no-outside-drinks policy.

Others questioned whether the operator should have physically handled or removed a customer’s personal belongings, particularly the water bottle.

The Singapore Police Force has confirmed that a police report was lodged in connection with the incident. As investigations are ongoing, the circumstances surrounding the dispute have not been independently established.

For now, the incident highlights the potential for seemingly minor disagreements over coffee shop rules to escalate, while also raising broader questions about how businesses and customers should handle disputes over house policies and personal belongings.
