Ng Jia Sheng, 20, was sentenced on Tuesday (September 1) to 6 months of reformative training for reportedly throwing a metal mug at his family’s maid, breaking her nose.
Ng will be detained at a centre where he will be following a strict regimen that includes foot drills and counselling as part of his reformation.
He pleaded guilty in June to using criminal force on his domestic helper, Ms Estabillo Soledad Agustin, 41, back in 2018, as well as for causing grievous hurt by a rash act.
He also used insulting words on the Filipina, which under the Protection from Harassment Act, is an offence.
The maid has since returned to her home country of Philippines.
According to court documents, Ng and Agustin had a dispute at his family home at Greenwood Avenue on June 7, 2018.
He asked her to turn on the air-conditioner, and when she replied in an “irritated manner”, he became angry.
They then got into a verbal fight after Agustin switched on the air-conditioner and threw the controller on the table.
The argument escalated to the point where both of them were shouting at each other.
Ng then spat at Agustin’s face and she returned the favor, spitting back at him.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Zhou Yihong said that during the altercation, the accused told the victimi that she was only a maid, was poor and had no right to be in Singapore.
Ng then followed Agustin into the kitchen after his father had intervened and separated both parties.
Ng subsequently picked up a metal mug and threw it at Agustin’s face, where she started crying and threw various objects at him in retaliation, none of her attempts hit her intended target.
Agustin subsequently went to the gate of the house and told another maid to help her call the police.
She was examined at Tan Tock Seng Hospital that same day and was found to have multiple facial injuries, which included a fracture on her nose.
Ng is currently out on bail of $10,000 and will begin serving his sentence upon surrendering at the State Court on November 20.
