Youth Filmed Vandalising HelloRide Bicycle at Yishun Football Court, Police Report Lodged

A youth has been filmed repeatedly throwing and slamming a shared HelloRide bicycle against the walls of a football court in Yishun, sparking public concern over vandalism and misuse of public transport infrastructure in Singapore. The incident, captured on video and circulated widely on social media, has drawn attention to the challenges faced by shared mobility operators operating in public spaces.

The short clip, which surfaced online over the weekend, shows the individual forcefully pushing the bicycle into the court walls multiple times. The footage quickly gained traction, amassing tens of thousands of views and prompting calls from netizens for accountability and stricter enforcement against the misuse of shared bicycles.

HelloRide, one of Singapore’s major bicycle-sharing operators, confirmed that it was alerted to the incident shortly after the video appeared online. The company subsequently lodged a police report and coordinated with the authorities to assist in investigations.

HelloRide Retrieved Bicycle Within an Hour of Notification

According to HelloRide Asia’s management, the bicycle involved was recovered within an hour of the company being informed of the incident. The swift response was part of the firm’s standard operating procedures when dealing with potential vandalism, public safety risks or damage to shared assets.

Initial checks indicated no obvious external damage to the bicycle. However, the company noted that a more comprehensive inspection would be conducted to assess any hidden structural or mechanical issues before deciding whether the bicycle can be returned to service. Shared bicycles are designed to withstand frequent use, but deliberate abuse raises safety concerns for subsequent users.

HelloRide also confirmed that relevant information, including operational data linked to the bicycle, has been provided to the police to support ongoing investigations. Cases involving damage to public property may carry legal consequences, especially if safety is compromised.

Earlier Incident Highlights Ongoing Public Misuse Concerns

This is not the first time HelloRide bicycles have been involved in incidents attracting public attention. Earlier in the month, multiple bicycles were found stacked along a canal railing in Clementi, after photos were circulated on social media platforms. In that case, the company similarly retrieved the bicycles within the same day and lodged a police report.

While such incidents remain relatively uncommon, they highlight broader issues surrounding vandalism, shared mobility responsibility and the cost of maintaining public transport alternatives. Damage to shared bicycles not only affects operators financially but may also lead to higher operational costs, potential service disruptions and increased pricing pressures.

HelloRide stressed that the vast majority of users in Singapore use shared bicycles responsibly. When isolated cases occur, the company’s protocol includes rapid retrieval, safety assessments, police reporting when necessary and full cooperation with authorities. As Singapore continues to promote sustainable transport, last-mile connectivity and eco-friendly commuting, responsible use of shared mobility services remains critical for keeping costs down and ensuring public safety.
