Violence Erupts After Youth Football Match in Sengkang

A 46-year-old man has been arrested following an alleged assault on a 51-year-old man with a foldable metal chair after an under-14 Singapore Youth League (SYL) football match in Sengkang on May 11, 2025. The incident occurred after the final whistle of a match between Geylang International FC and Albirex Singapore Football Academy, which Geylang won decisively with a score of 8-0.

Details of the Incident

The altercation reportedly took place as players and supporters were leaving the venue at Sengkang Secondary School. Tensions had been escalating throughout the match, with both players and parents becoming increasingly agitated. According to statements from the SYL, the situation deteriorated after a parent of an Albirex player accused Geylang’s coach of allowing his players to insult her during the game. The coach subsequently apologized, but the atmosphere remained charged.

The injured man, a parent of an Albirex player, sustained injuries near his left eye and was taken to Sengkang General Hospital for treatment. Fortunately, he was discharged the same night after receiving medical attention.

The police were alerted to the incident around 7:15 PM on the same day. Following the report, the 46-year-old suspect was arrested for a rash act causing hurt. Albirex Singapore Football Academy released a statement condemning the assault and confirmed that the injured parent had made a police report immediately after the incident. They noted that the parent is recovering and that his vision is improving.
