The police have taken a significant step in addressing loanshark harassment by arresting a 15-year-old boy believed to be connected to two separate incidents of such criminal activity.

On November 20, 2024, authorities received a report regarding loanshark harassment at a residential property on Yishun Street 22. Responding officers discovered that red paint had been splashed on the main door and gate, and graffiti had been sprayed on the wall adjacent to the unit.

The following day, another report of loanshark harassment was made at a residence on Chai Chee Road. In this instance, red paint was again used to vandalize the main door and gate, while graffiti was found on the floor in front of the unit. Additionally, a debtor’s note was affixed to the wall, further indicating the harassment.

Following these incidents, police conducted thorough investigations, utilizing images captured by police surveillance cameras. This led to the identification of the teenager, who was subsequently arrested on November 22, 2024, by officers from the Woodlands and Bedok Police Divisions.

The teenager is set to face charges in court on November 23, 2024, under the Moneylenders Act of 2008. For first-time offenders, the penalties for loanshark harassment can be severe, including fines ranging from $5,000 to $50,000, imprisonment for up to five years, and caning of up to six strokes.

The police have reiterated their zero-tolerance stance towards loanshark harassment, emphasizing that individuals who engage in vandalism, create disturbances, or threaten public safety will face stringent legal consequences.

Authorities are urging the public to steer clear of loansharks and to refrain from any involvement with such illegal activities. Citizens are encouraged to report any suspected loansharking activities by calling the police at ‘999’.
