17 Arrested Across S’pore As Police Step Up Crackdown Ahead Of World Cup, Over S$720,000 Seized

Seventeen people have been arrested following a large-scale police operation targeting suspected unlawful remote gambling activities across Singapore.

The coordinated enforcement action saw officers conduct simultaneous raids at multiple locations islandwide, resulting in the seizure of more than S$720,000 in cash along with electronic devices and gambling-related items.

The operation comes as authorities intensify efforts to curb illegal betting activities ahead of major international sporting events, including the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

Raids Conducted Across Multiple Estates

According to the Singapore Police Force (SPF), officers from the Criminal Investigation Department, Police Intelligence Department and Special Operations Command carried out the operation on 6 July.

The raids took place across numerous locations including Yishun, Ang Mo Kio, Toa Payoh, Potong Pasir, Changi, Pasir Ris, Bedok, Joo Chiat, Tampines, Kaki Bukit, West Coast, Bukit Batok and Choa Chu Kang.

A total of 14 men and three women, aged between 45 and 76, were arrested during the operation.

Investigators also seized more than S$720,000 in cash, mobile phones, computers and other items believed to be linked to the suspected gambling activities.

Five To Be Charged In Court

Police said four men aged between 47 and 76, along with a 47-year-old woman, are expected to be charged in court on 8 July.

They will face charges under the Gambling Control Act 2022.

Investigations into the remaining suspects are ongoing.

Authorities have not disclosed further details regarding the scale of the alleged operations or how long they had been active before the raids.

Severe Penalties For Illegal Gambling Activities

Under Singapore law, individuals involved in operating unlawful betting services can face significant penalties.

Those convicted of conducting illegal betting operations may be fined up to S$500,000 and jailed for up to seven years.

Persons acting as agents for unlawful betting operations may face fines of up to S$200,000 and imprisonment of up to seven years.

Even individuals who place bets with illegal gambling service providers can face penalties, including fines of up to S$10,000, imprisonment of up to six months, or both.

Police Warn Against Illegal Betting

SPF noted that major sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup often lead to increased gambling activity, including illegal betting operations.

Authorities said they will continue taking firm action against those involved in unlawful gambling activities, whether as operators, agents or participants.

Members of the public have also been reminded to avoid all forms of illegal gambling and to seek help if they are experiencing gambling-related problems.

Investigations into the case are continuing.
