2 DRONES WITH GRENADE LAUNCHER FOUND IN SOUTHERN THAILAND, INVESTIGATION ONGOING

Urgent Investigation Launched After Drones with Grenade Launchers Discovered in Songkhla

An alarming discovery in Songkhla province has prompted a high-level investigation following the unearthing of two drones equipped with grenade launchers in the Sadao district. The drones, suspected to be intended for violent acts or illegal activities, were found on June 12 in Ban Rai Ok, Moo 2, Samnak Kham subdistrict.

Details of the Discovery

Lieutenant General Paisal Nusang, the Fourth Army Region Commander and Director of Internal Security Operations, led the inspection of the drones. The initial investigation involved multiple agencies, including the 5th Infantry Regiment Task Force, local police, Border Patrol Police 437, the explosive ordnance disposal team (EOD), and the Region 9 Forensic Science Office.

The drones, identified as large six-rotor models, were modified to carry six 60-millimetre grenade launchers and had a setup for releasing improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Although no explosives were found at the scene, the modifications indicate a potential for use in targeted attacks.

Investigation and Implications

Forensic teams collected fingerprints and other evidence from the site, which has led to connections with a suspected group behind the drones. Authorities are currently compiling evidence to identify and apprehend those responsible for the drones’ presence.

The drones are capable of flying up to 800 meters in altitude, covering a distance of eight to ten kilometers, and carrying a payload of 10 to 15 kilograms. They are also equipped with a Home Point system for take-off and landing, enhancing their operational capabilities.

In response to the discovery, Lt. Gen. Paisal convened a meeting with key officials, including Major General Apinan Jaemjang, commander of the 5th Infantry Division, and Colonel Thawiporn Kanathong, commander of the 5th Infantry Regiment. The meeting focused on assessing the situation and developing strategies for the ongoing investigation.

Potential Threats and Regional Cooperation

Two main hypotheses have emerged regarding the drones’ intended use: they may be employed in violent incidents targeting economic areas or government locations, or they could be utilized for smuggling illegal items, particularly along the Thai-Malaysian border.

In light of the potential threats posed by these drones, security agencies from Thailand and neighboring Malaysia are collaborating to expand the investigation and prevent any incidents in the region. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.

Conclusion

The discovery of drones equipped with grenade launchers in Songkhla raises significant concerns about security and the potential for violence in the region. As authorities work diligently to investigate and address this alarming situation, the collaboration between Thai and Malaysian security forces will be crucial in mitigating risks and ensuring public safety.
