A 20-year-old Singaporean motorcyclist died after a lorry reportedly crashed into his stalled motorcycle along Malaysia’s North-South Expressway on Sunday night.
According to Malaysian authorities, the victim was identified as Lutfi Adib Yusof.
Police said the young rider was travelling towards Port Dickson when his motorcycle is believed to have suffered mechanical issues along the highway.
The breakdown allegedly forced him to stop at the emergency lane before tragedy struck moments later.
Authorities said a lorry travelling in the same direction subsequently lost control and slammed into the stationary motorcycle.
Victim Suffered Severe Head Injuries
The impact of the collision reportedly left the Singaporean rider with severe head injuries.
Emergency responders rushed him to Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital, but he later succumbed to his injuries while on the way there.
The 45-year-old lorry driver involved in the accident was not injured during the crash, according to police statements.
Photos released by Malaysian authorities showed the aftermath of the accident, with the motorcycle badly damaged following the collision.
The case is currently being investigated by the Batu Pahat District Police Headquarters.
Highway Accidents Continue To Raise Concerns Among Singapore Riders
The incident has once again sparked concerns among Singaporean motorists travelling into Malaysia, especially motorcyclists using the North-South Expressway during long-distance trips.
Many Singapore riders frequently travel across the Causeway during weekends and public holidays for food, leisure rides and short getaways to destinations such as Malacca, Port Dickson and Kuala Lumpur.
Online, several netizens expressed condolences over the death of the young motorcyclist, with some urging riders to stay extra alert when stopping along highways, even in emergency lanes.
Others also highlighted the dangers faced by motorcyclists whenever vehicles break down on high-speed roads, especially at night or during poor visibility conditions.
Police investigations into the fatal accident are currently ongoing.
