A 22-year-old man was killed after a group of armed attackers allegedly ambushed several friends who were drinking together outside a restaurant in Johor.
The brutal attack reportedly took place in the early hours of Thursday (21 May) in the Pekan Nanas area of Pontian district.
Videos circulating online showed multiple men suddenly charging towards a group seated along a five-foot walkway before repeatedly attacking them with weapons.
Victim Unable To Escape During Sudden Attack
According to local police, officers received a report at about 3.53am regarding a man lying in front of a restaurant covered in blood.
Investigators later confirmed the victim was a 22-year-old local man who suffered severe injuries to his arm and body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The attack is believed to have unfolded while the victim and several friends were drinking and chatting outside the premises.
Online footage suggested around six suspects arrived in two separate vehicles before rushing towards the group armed with machete-like weapons.
Several people managed to flee, but the deceased reportedly failed to escape in time and was repeatedly slashed during the assault.
Some of the others attempting to run away were also reportedly injured in the attack.
Suspects Flee Scene After Attack
After carrying out the assault, the suspects quickly returned to their vehicles and fled the area.
One of the getaway cars was seen reversing into another vehicle while attempting to escape before speeding away from the scene.
Police later cordoned off the restaurant area as forensic officers conducted investigations.
Pools of blood could reportedly be seen outside the eatery following the violent incident.
Police Launch Murder Investigation
Royal Malaysia Police confirmed the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
Authorities are currently tracking down those involved and investigating the motive behind the deadly attack.
Police have urged members of the public with information related to the case to come forward and assist investigations.
They also warned against spreading rumours or unverified claims online that could interfere with the ongoing probe.
The shocking attack has sparked concern online, with many Malaysians expressing alarm over the level of violence displayed in the viral footage.
