Domestic Helper Rescued After Being Trapped Under Car in Sembawang Accident
A 35-year-old domestic helper was taken to hospital after becoming trapped beneath a car following an accident in Sembawang on Thursday (23 July).
Emergency responders from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) used specialised hydraulic rescue equipment to free the woman, whose leg was pinned between the vehicle’s front right wheel and fender. She was later conveyed to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital while conscious.
Police confirmed that the incident occurred at about 8pm along the service road near Block 508A Wellington Circle. The accident involved a car and a female pedestrian, while investigations into the circumstances remain ongoing.
Witnesses Rush Over After Hearing Screams
According to eyewitnesses quoted by Chinese-language newspaper Shin Min Daily News, nearby residents rushed towards the scene after hearing a woman crying out in pain.
One resident, identified only as Mr Du, said he was walking past the area when he heard the screams. Together with several others, he discovered the domestic helper lying on the ground with her left leg trapped beneath the car’s front right wheel.
He claimed the helper had been returning home after shopping when she was struck by the vehicle. Another resident, aged 59, said the woman appeared to be in severe pain and was crying continuously, prompting him to immediately contact emergency services.
Driver Allegedly Unaware of Collision
Witnesses also alleged that the driver initially appeared unaware that a person had been struck.
According to those at the scene, the motorist was seen attempting to turn the steering wheel while remaining inside the vehicle, leading nearby residents to shout at him to stop moving the car.
The driver reportedly stayed calm throughout the incident and only exited the vehicle after police officers and SCDF personnel arrived at the scene to begin rescue operations.
SCDF Frees Woman After 20-Minute Rescue
When reporters arrived, emergency vehicles, including a Red Rhino and two fire engines, were stationed outside the housing block while more than 10 SCDF officers worked to free the trapped woman.
The rescue operation took approximately 20 minutes before firefighters successfully extricated her using hydraulic rescue equipment.
She was then placed into an ambulance and taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital for medical treatment.
Police Investigations Ongoing
The Singapore Police Force confirmed that the driver, a 39-year-old man, is currently assisting with investigations.
After the injured pedestrian had been rescued, officers instructed the driver to move his vehicle to a nearby loading bay, where further enquiries were carried out.
The authorities have not announced any arrests or charges at this stage. Investigations into the cause of the accident are continuing.
