The Police have arrested a 28-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a case of loanshark harassment.
On 23 July 2024 at about 9.00pm, the Police were alerted to a case of loanshark harassment along Hougang Avenue 9, where a debtor’s note was left at the gate of a residential unit.
Through follow-up investigations and with the aid of images from Police cameras and closed-circuit televisions (CCTVs), officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him on 1 August 2024. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man is also allegedly involved in other similar cases of loanshark harassment. A debtor’s note was seized as case exhibit.
The man will be charged in court on 3 August 2024 under the Moneylenders Act 2008. For first-time offenders, the offence of loanshark harassment carries a fine between $5,000 and $50,000, with imprisonment of up to five years, and caning of up to six strokes.
The Police have zero tolerance for loanshark harassment activities. Those who deliberately vandalise properties, cause annoyance or disrupt public safety, peace and security, will be dealt with severely in accordance with the law.
